Junior Primary

The success of Glenwood Preparatory School’s Junior Primary Department (Foundation Phase) is perhaps best highlighted by the huge demand for placement in Grade 1.

The Junior Primary Department (Foundation Phase) is led by Mrs Van Zyl, who through her astute leadership and motivated staff team has established an excellent reputation in this highly specialised phase.  The employment of additional Governing Body Staff has ensured that the class sizes are relatively small and thus conducive to effective learning.  Our teachers go the ‘extra mile’ and fully endorse the motto ‘The School that Cares.’

Specialist teachers are employed to teach Computers, Physical Education, Media, Music, Afrikaans and isiZulu disciplines, thus ensuring a solid foundation in all learning areas.

The Foundation Phase currently consists of five classes in Grade 1 and four classes in Grade 2 and Grade 3. Each class has a Teacher Assistant who works with the teacher Monday to Friday for the full day. The Teacher Assistants greatly enhance the learning and teaching process.

The beautifully decorated, air-conditioned classrooms provide an ideal climate for the pupils to enjoy the many exciting and challenging activities that the Foundation Phase provides. The Junior Primary Department is situated on the South side of the school and is thus geographically separated from the Senior Primary Section, which is housed in the North Wing of Glenwood Prep.  Each Phase has its own playgrounds and facilities with obvious benefits to the children concerned.

An extensive and professionally run sports programme ensures that every Junior Primary pupil is given the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the physical and social benefits that such activities offer. The extensive Extra-Mural Programme encompasses a wide range of Sport and Cultural activities and additional Professional Coaches and Specialists are employed to assist the staff.

At Glenwood Prep we aim to develop each child as an individual, by identifying their strengths and weaknesses, building on their previous knowledge and providing them with the skills necessary to reach their full potential.

Our pupils are our best advert, their courteous manners and happy disposition serve to reinforce the principles of a ‘School of Excellence within our Community’.
